I’ve been going to Wellnest’s Life Learning Center for a few years now. They’ve helped me with therapy, case management, and employment support. Recently, I received a scholarship from the SoLa I CAN Foundation worth $2,500 for my academic achievements and community involvement. Despite the pandemic and virtual learning, I made it to the Dean’s List in both the Fall and Spring Semesters of my senior year at California State University Dominguez Hills. After graduation, I plan to pursue a Master of Social Work degree and become a Licensed Social Worker to help my community. When I’m not studying, I enjoy attending fitness boot camps and spending time with my family and cats.

At 17, I had trouble regulating my emotions and communicating, which was impacting my academic and daily life. I was failing high school and at risk for not graduating, and I was hospitalized for multiple suicide attempts. I was feeling depressed, anxious, and alone. Luckily, my high school referred me to Wellnest’s Life Learning Center, where I received therapy, medication support, case management, rehabilitation, and employment services. Over two years, I developed positive coping and social skills, and achieved academic success! I graduated high school, enrolled in community college and began volunteering with CultivaLA. Through Wellnest, I received support for my legal citizenship application and rent, furniture, and food to eliminate homelessness. I graduated from Wellnest in March 2021, and I am inspired to become a mental health clinician and help others.

I am currently enrolled in Wellnest’s Home Visitation Program. My family has been in the program for the past year. We were going through a difficult time, with three young children under the age of five, and my husband out of work because of an injury. Our youngest child contracted COVID-19 and we also received an eviction notice. Through the Home Visitation Program, we were linked to community resources, including the Eviction Defense Network and Angelino Housing Aid, which helped us pay back rent and win our case in court. We are now stably housed and continue to participate in the program to nurture our children’s healthy development.

I had been experiencing anxiety since I was a young boy and it had been holding me back from achieving what I wanted in life. I was looking for help, so I came to Wellnest’s Access & Wellness Center and began working with their counselors. Through therapy sessions, I began to understand the origins of my anxiety and learned coping strategies that gave me more control. Gradually, I was able to take the initial steps towards going out and making friends. I started a job and even planned to return to school. Thanks to the help I received at Wellnest, I am now on my way in the world.
